Landscape architecture is the art of creating unique places within a larger world. Scenic design, by contrast, imagines an entire world within a confined space. Together, they reveal the power of spatial storytelling whether shaping immersive environments outdoors or crafting worlds on stage.
Drawing on my background in both landscape architecture and theatrical production, this piece by L. Tyler Swanson explores how landscapes can tell stories much like a stage set. Inspired by John B. Jackson’s concept of “Landscape as Theater,” it considers how performance, memory, and audience experience can shape narrative-rich environments that foster deeper connections to place and history.
